BVSCAA Featured Artist

Nuri Amanatullah

Nuri Amanatullah is Bear Valley Springs Cultural Art Association's featured artist for May 2024

Nuri Amanatullah is a Tehachapi resident and an Antelope Valley-based painter, illustrator, and designer whose stylized, graphic depictions of flora and fauna are represented using both traditional techniques and digital media, primarily in illustration and large-scale murals. His work is largely focused on the intersection of local flora & fauna and human civilization. Coming from Lancaster, his work sought to depict the unseen beauty of the desert. He subverts the notion of the drab desert landscape by using bright and bold color palettes inspired by blazing sunsets. His work reflects nature, but not just a romanticized version of what we wish were true, but rather, to examine the state of the natural world and our profound impact on it. As muralist, Nuri views art as a means of placemaking—developing connection between people, community and the spaces we inhabit. Nuri also works  with a non-profit organization, Housing Corporation of America (HCA), allowing him to take the idea of placemaking further. HCA is a 501(c)(3) that provides educational, arts-outreach to affordable-income housing in the Antelope Valley. Working as their art director and program instructor, has enabled him to work in the communities of Lancaster and Palmdale, helping foster the arts and creativity to populations of all ages, including at-risk youth and seniors. HCA has an ongoing partnership with the Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH) where students’ artwork is displayed in the classroom gallery visible from Lancaster BLVD. It’s a win-win for both sides—residents of Lancaster are able to display their artwork in a local, world-class institution and MOAH’s outreach expands into the community, directly affecting lives of many who otherwise may not have the exposure.
